Pakistan General Election Senate Passes Resolution Seeking Delay In Elections

Pakistan Election: Uncertainty has increased in Pakistan regarding the general elections to be held on February 8. With a little more than a month left for the election, the upper house of parliament passed a resolution on Friday (January 5) demanding the election be delayed due to security concerns.

According to Dawn report, the proposal presented by independent senator Dilawar Khan got overwhelming support in the upper house of Pakistan’s parliament. However, Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party opposed it.

Raised the issue of security of leaders
Senator Dilawar Khan said that most of the areas of the country are experiencing severe cold at this time, hence it is impossible to participate in the elections in those areas. Expressing concern over the security situation, he said that the law and order situation is not good and politicians are being targeted, including the attack on Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazal (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Attack on security forces
He said that security forces are also being attacked in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (province). Dilawar said, “The Home Ministry has informed about the serious threats to the lives of prominent politicians. The Senate says that elections should not be held without removing all these obstacles, hence the February 8 elections should be postponed.”

He said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) should start the process of postponing the elections. The resolution was passed in the presence of only 14 MPs, despite clear orders from the Supreme Court to the Election Commission of Pakistan to stick to its announcement of holding elections on February 8, Dawn reported.
